When playing any poker game, players need to know which hands beat which.
Below you will see all of the different hand types that you will need to know before playing poker. No matter which game you play, these poker hands and their ranking will stay the same. All hands are based on the best 5 card poker hand.
The lowest hand ranking there is when you 5 cards that consist of no pairs, straights, or flushes. In this example, you’re highest card is an ‘Ace’. So you have ‘Ace High’.
1 pair is when you have 2 cards that are the same denomination. In this example, you have 2 aces, which makes a pair of aces. Any pair beats just a high card, and aces are the best pair you can have. A pair of 2’s is the lowest pair you can have.
2 Pair is when you have 2 separate pairs. In this example you have Aces & Sixes, with a 4 kicker. This is also sometimes referred to as ‘Aces Up’.
3 Of A Kind
3 of a kind is when you have 3 cards of the same denomination. In this example you have 3 aces, which is the best 3 of a kind you can have.
3 of a kind is also referred to as ‘trips’ or a ‘set’.
A straight is when you have 5 cards in a row, such as in this example you have 3, 4, 5, 6, 7. This means you have a straight to the 7.
The highest straight you can have is 10, J, Q, K, Ace, which is referred to as ‘Broadway’.
Aces can be used as high or low.
A Flush is when you have 5 cards of the same suit. In this example, you have an Ace high flush, because you have 5 cards that are clubs.
A Full House occurs when you have 3 of a kind, along with a pair. In this example, you have 3 aces and a pair of 9’s. This means you have aces over nines. Full houses are also often called a ‘Boat’ or ‘Full Boat’.
Four Of A Kind
Four of a kind is when you have 4 cards of the same denomination. In this example you have 4 aces, which is the best 4 of a kind that you can have.
Four of a kind is also referred to as ‘quads’.
A Straight Flush occurs when you have 5 cards in a row, that are all the same suit. In this example you have A, 2, 3, 4, 5, of all clubs. You have a 5 high straight flush.
Aces can be used as a high or low.
A Royal Flush is the best hand in poker. It beats everything else.
A Royal Flush is just a straight flush, however it must be 10, J, Q, K, Ace.
In this example you have a royal flush of clubs. Nice hand.
